The National Football League has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture made toward fans during a Sunday’s contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the wrong digit,” he noted. “It was accidentally performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the first time an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
