Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated fury after the ex-president accused a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Content That Provoked the Debate
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in military or intelligence capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to safeguard and defend this founding document," the lawmakers affirmed in the short video. "And right now, the risks to our democratic foundation don't only come from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can reject illegal orders, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our national charter."
The Former President's Furious Response
The clip appeared to prompt a heated reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate post, he wrote: "This represents really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Officials Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a unified announcement denouncing the statements.
"Political violence has no position in America," they stated. "Elected officials who participated in the video all acted our country with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to guarantee the safety of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these radical social media posts and withdraw his dangerous language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Officials' Defiant Answer
The lawmakers who appeared in the video also published a declaration.
"We identify as former service members and defense specialists who love this nation and made an pledge to safeguard and support the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No threat, coercion, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that sacred duty."
"The significant point is that the ex-president views it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and responsibility to follow only legal commands. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
Further Political Reactions
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the President of the United States is demanding the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that represents without precedent in US history."
The GOP official also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the offense of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Reaction
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative replied: "Absolutely not."
"We should understand about what the president is reacting to," the representative said. "We see active officials of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to personnel of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the executive's proper directives."
She stated: "The integrity of our defense system relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are essentially encouraging."
