When she finds Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane later called the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

This man's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Based on what is revealed about Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. From then on, he struggles with the influence of a sinister presence, much like how Will Byers was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains.
