We are analyzing images and video circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to check the location of where the images originated relied on posts indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
